The National Institute on Aging, however, says that in older people and those with certain chronic illnesses, the flu shot often is less effective in preventing flu than in reducing symptoms and the risk of serious illness and death. Flu is caused by a virus, not bacteria, so the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) says antibiotics are not effective against flu. However, your doctor may prescribe medications that can reduce the duration of flu and its symptoms. AAFP says that over a hundred different viruses can cause colds.
