New Poligrip Formula to Drop Zinc

In the news...(February 22, 2010) - The makers of the dental adhesive, Polygrip, say they are planning to reformulate the products because of dangers from long term use. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare says there is a potential health risk from long-term excessive use of zinc containing denture adhesives Super Poligrip 'Original', 'Ultra Fresh' and 'Extra Care'.

Zinc is considered an essential part of the diet. (Read about "Vitamins & Minerals") Recent studies however, suggest that an excessive intake of zinc containing denture adhesives over several years may lead to the development of neurological symptoms and blood problems such as anemia. (Read about "Anemia") Neurological symptoms may include numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms and legs and difficulties with walking and balance.

Dr Howard Marsh, Chief Medical Officer, GSK Consumer Healthcare, commented, "The safety of our consumers is our primary concern. We are taking this action because we have become aware of potential health problems associated with the long-term excessive use of our zinc-containing denture adhesive products. These reports are rare, given that several million people worldwide are users of the products. If anyone is concerned that they may have been using the product in excess they should stop using it, talk to their doctor and switch to a zinc-free alternative. Using too much adhesive might be a sign of ill-fitting dentures. Denture wearers should see their dentists regularly to check the fit of their dentures."

GSK says the products are safe when used as directed but the problems may arise when consumers apply more adhesive than directed and use it more than once per day.
