Fats and Food Quiz

Here's more information on our quiz questions & answers:
  1. According to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), for the average healthy adult, daily intake of saturated fats should be less than 7 percent of the total daily calories and overall fat intake should be less than 35 percent of total daily calories.
  2. According to the American Dietetic Association, unsaturated fats used in moderation can be healthy. But the benefits of unsaturated fats are lost when they undergo a process called "hydrogenation" which solidifies them so they have a longer shelf-life in processed foods. Hydrogenated trans fats or trans-fatty acids are often the kind found in shortening and margarine for example.
  3. Fats can serve an important role in diet, for example, helping our bodies utilize so-called fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin A and Vitamin D. Also, the American Medical Association says extremely low-fat diets, which can be very high in carbohydrates, may actually be harmful for people who have certain medical conditions.
